Resolved Question: Another question about coal fired SP locos?

9 June 2010, 10:42 pm

I was surprised to learn that there were coal fired F class 2-10-2s on the SP. Odder still, many were built as oil fired locomotives, then converted to coal burners and then back to oil fired. Unlike eastern railroads, the SP didn't have a huge supply of coal readily available, and most locos were oil fired as a result. I have not been able to find a reason for the back and forth change as of yet. But my question is this: Were there any coal fired 'P' class 4-6-2s on the SP? I have seen photos of tenders taken from the wrong angle to tell, but that suggest there were some of these critters operating on the old Portland Division. I know that there were coal fired AC class articulated engines that weren't cab forwards that operated on the Modoc Subdivision out of Klamath Falls, Oregon, to Wendel, Nevada, so the coal burning Pacific's may have seen service there on the Portland Division between Klamath Falls and Portland. But, the coal fired F class engines operated elsewhere on the system, so the coal fired Pacific's, if they existed at all, may have also. But I've found nothing definite on this point as of yet, so I'm calling for a dog catcher. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!... Read More »
